Synera: Agentic AI for engineering

Since September 2022 I have been working as a Senior UX Designer at Synera, a start-up based in Bremen. Synera is a platform for AI-powered engineering automation: engineers build their design and calculation processes once as a visual workflow, instead of repeating them by hand for every variant. With AI agents, even processes that cannot be standardised can be mapped digitally and run autonomously. I work in a product trio of tech lead, product manager and myself as UX. Engineering, business and the user perspective therefore sit at the same table, from the first idea to the release.

Almost everything I do starts with research. I run interviews, shadow engineers during their daily work and test concepts and prototypes with them. The findings turn into story maps and user journeys, for small improvements as much as for major features. They are my most important tool for getting the team to a shared view of the problem before anyone talks about solutions. Engineering software is domain-heavy, and without that groundwork you reliably design past reality.

From there it goes into design sessions, wireframes and prototypes. High fidelity designs are built in Figma or, increasingly, directly in code: AI-assisted prototypes you can actually use. That shortens the path from idea to validation considerably, with developers, with stakeholders and above all with real users. What is technically feasible gets settled early, not at handover.

My biggest project is Synera Run, where I was the lead designer from the very beginning, from the first prototype to a fully fledged product. Synera Run makes published workflows usable for people who never open the editor themselves: fill in a form, start the computation, get a result. Alongside it I design features in the Synera Editor, with a focus on server connection and publishing, and I created the first MVP for the Synera Multi-Agent System. My main focus at the moment is the Synera Assistant, the AI sidekick for workflow creators that helps them build better workflows faster. The first version is currently being tested in a beta with around 100 users.

On top of that comes the design system. I helped build it from scratch, fully tokenised with Figma variables, and I have been extending and maintaining it ever since. I also hand-crafted more than 90 icons for the Synera nodes, which in a visual editor are not decoration but the fastest way to recognise a building block.

At Synera, AI is currently changing not just the product but the way I work. I work AI-first, build prototypes directly in code, and keep developing my methods for a world where design no longer delivers fixed screens but trust, control and transparency for autonomous systems.
